Chapter 10

After a late afternoon walk, the Zodiac Pack returned to their shared suite and smiled at Lurain, who asked if she could get the group dinner. Charlie agreed and thanked Lurain for her help.

Inside the suite, Raine took a hot shower to warm up after being at the open-air stall with Chris. Charlie also shed a few layers of clothes, then collapsed into the sofa with Kaden on her lap. Andren was shedding a layer of clothing but answered the front door after a few knocks. A low growl started in Charlie's stomach when Lurain brought in the food.

"Tah for dinner." Charlie traded a smile with Lurain, who glanced at Kaden on Charlie's lap.

"Your friend is beautiful." Lurain didn't wait for a response and said goodnight before leaving the suite.

Dinner was quiet and the overall mood cloudy. Raine was normally talkative, but tonight she was distant. After dinner she excused herself from the table and went into the bedroom with her tablet. Charlie frowned and looked at Andren for help. Had Charlie missed something?

"She is upset and sad," Andren whispered and tapped her nose.

Charlie wracked her mind about today, but nothing stood out that would have brought Raine's mood crashing down. In fact, she thought Kal's request to have Raine in charge of the QMT project would have boosted her mood despite the circumstances. With a headshake, Charlie bent down, picked up Kaden's empty bowl, and said, "I'm going to check on her."

Andren gave a quick nod and started cleaning up after their meal.

Charlie entered the shared bedroom that she hadn't slept in once since their return to Tarrak. Her things were piled in a corner, but that was the only indication she was staying in the room. "Hey," she said in English.

Raine was sitting in the middle of the queen-size bed, legs crossed, and tablet cradled in her lap. She tapped the screen and peered up at Charlie. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. "Are you going to see Kal?" There was broken heaviness in her voice, pulling at Charlie's heart.

"Raine?" Charlie ignored the question and hastened to kick off her boots. "What's wrong?"

Raine shook her head, then bent forward and bowed her head. Her gaze was fixed on the tablet's screen again.

Charlie crawled over and caught a glimpse of the paused image on the tablet. She had seen the video several times in the past on the Liberator. "Oh no," she murmured and jerked her attention up to Raine's strained profile. Scrambling across the short distance, she said, "It's his birthday." Each Earth year, Raine mourned her lost family on their birthdays. Today would have been her little brother Ricardo's birthday. I'm an idiot for not realizing it sooner.

"He would have turned twenty-eight," Raine murmured and big tears fell, splashing against the tablet. She stared bitterly at the tablet, which had been paused on an old video from one of Ricardo's birthdays as a child.

Charlie sat behind her sister, legs on either side. She hooked her arms around Raine's waist and pressed their temples together.
